Goals for 2010

I’m not going to call them resolutions, because that word is pretty much identical to “failures waiting to happen,” but here are my goals for 2010, posted for the world to see (as if that’s going to make me any more accountable than any other method).

  • Spend less money. I’m already fairly frugal but there are lots of ways I can cut back on my spending. 2009 was sort of an expensive year – bought a new TV, new Blu-ray player, new car, new computer, had several expensive dentist appointments, etc. Hopefully 2010 is easier on my wallet.
  • Drink less caffeine. I’m a caffeine-aholic. On an average workday I have two to three 8oz cans of Mountain Dew, and maybe an energy drink like Red Bull. It’s not healthy, and I need to stop. More water and juice (I already drink juice like no tomorrow).
  • Lose at least 10 pounds. Kind of ties into the goal above, but I need to eat smaller portions, and eat better food than I have been.
  • Speak less, say more.
  • Get back into coding. I kind of fell away from true web development and PHP coding over the last couple years, and I want to get back into it more. Even if just for my own entertainment.
  • Get more involved in social events, particularly social media and web-centered events. It’d be fun to see a tweetup happen somewhere nearby. I’d love to attend a conference like SXSW (or maybe something a little less crazy) or similar web-related discussions.
  • Cure cancer. Colonize a new planet. Defeat Chuck Norris in battle. I find it’s good to have a few goals you know you can easily acheive, so when my first five don’t work out so well I’ll have these as fallbacks.

Good goals. I recently achieved the “drink less caffeine” goal by switching to a rooibos tea that’s supposed to give energy. It doesn’t work, but having it keeps me away from energy drinks.

I’ve been lucky enough to not need to lose weight, but when I try to get healthier, the most effective method for me is to find a healthy food (even just one) that I like as much as the other stuff. For instance, every day I get a veggie sub for lunch. I do it because it’s damn tasty, not because it’s just a goal, and that really helps.

I can’t help on the spending, 2009 was killer for me too…

As for coding more, I’ve been having fun with go lately :) http://golang.org
